In short
- You can compare prices without telling us who you are. An account is optional and only exists so WhatsApp alerts can follow you to another device.
- Your county and payment choice are saved in your own browser, not in an account with us.
- Our visit counts come from Plausible, which is cookie-less and reports totals only; no cookie follows you across other sites. The one cookie we set is a random, anonymous token used to count Buy clicks.
- WhatsApp price alerts are opt-in: we only message a number you gave us, after you agreed, and replying STOP switches them off immediately.
- You can ask us what we hold about you, have it corrected or deleted, and complain to the ODPC.
Who we are
JuaBei is operated by JuaBei Technologies Limited, a company registered in Kenya (No. PVT-9L196KZ9), reachable by post at P.O. Box 69665, 00400 Nairobi. We are the data controller for the personal data described on this page, registered with the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) as a data controller (Registration No. 576-129B-D9C0).
JuaBei compares what a product actually costs to get to your door in Kenya: the price on the merchant's page, plus delivery to your county, plus any cash-on-delivery fee. We currently compare listings from Jumia and Kilimall.
This policy explains what personal data we handle, why we handle it, and what you can ask us to do about it. It is written for the Kenya Data Protection Act, 2019.
What we collect today
Nothing that identifies you, unless you create an account. You can search, compare and open a product page without giving us your name, phone number or email address.
- County and payment preference: saved in your own browser's storage, on your device, so the app remembers them between visits. Your county is sent with each price request so we can look up the delivery rate for it. We do not save it to our database and we do not attach it to any identity.
- Buy clicks: when you tap through to a merchant, we log the product, the listing, the merchant and the time, under a random visitor token stored in a first-party cookie (jb_vid) on your device. The token identifies a browser, not a person: it is not linked to any name, number or account, and other sites cannot read it. A random click id is added to the merchant link so we can tell merchants how many shoppers we sent them.
- Searches: we count the words typed into the search box and how many results they returned, so we know what shoppers are looking for. Nothing that identifies you is stored alongside them: no name, no number, no account, and not even the visitor token above.
- No advertising or cross-site tracking cookies: the visitor cookie above is the only cookie we set, and it never follows you across other sites.
- Technical logs: the providers that host and serve this site keep ordinary request logs, such as IP address, browser type and the page requested, for security and troubleshooting. A county sent with a price request can appear in those logs.
Clearing your browser data removes the county and payment preference we saved on your device, and the visitor cookie.
What an account stores
An account is optional. Everything on JuaBei works signed out, and skipping the sign-up costs you nothing.
- Your name: only so the app can address you rather than a number.
- Your phone number, verified by a one-time code: this is the account itself, because it is the same number your WhatsApp alerts are sent to. We also record the date you agreed to receive those alerts, which is the proof of consent we are required to keep.
- An email address, only if you choose to add one: it is there so you can get back into your account if you change your number. Leaving it empty is a normal choice, not a limited one.
We do not sell any of this, and we send nothing to your number except the alerts you asked for. Replying STOP on WhatsApp switches those off immediately. You can delete the account yourself from the Account screen: your name, number and email go, and your WhatsApp alerts stop with them.
WhatsApp price alerts
Price-drop alerts are opt-in. Whether you set one on the site, in the WhatsApp chat or by creating an account, we ask for your phone number and your explicit consent to message you on WhatsApp before we send anything.
- What we hold: your phone number, the date you agreed to WhatsApp messages, your county, the products and target prices you asked to be alerted about, and a record of each alert we sent and whether it was delivered.
- What we use it for: sending the alerts you asked for, and nothing else. No marketing messages. We do not sell, rent or share your number.
- Stopping: reply STOP on WhatsApp at any time and every alert on that number switches off immediately; ask us and we delete the number and its alerts.
If how we use your number ever changes, this page changes first, not after.
Analytics
We use Plausible Analytics to count visits and page views. It is cookie-less, hosted in the European Union, reports aggregate statistics only, and does not profile individual visitors or follow you across other sites.
There are no advertising pixels or third-party trackers on this site.
Other people's data
The listings we show are product information collected from merchants' public product pages: title, price, image, link and delivery rates.
We deliberately do not collect listings that are built around an individual seller's identity, such as personal classified adverts carrying a seller's name and phone number. That is other people's personal data and we have no reason to hold it.
Who we share data with
We do not sell personal data and we do not share it for advertising.
- Service providers that run the site and the messaging provider that delivers WhatsApp alerts handle data on our behalf and only for that purpose.
- Merchants: tapping through to a merchant takes you to their site, where their own privacy policy applies. We do not pass your personal information to them.
- The law: we would disclose data where a Kenyan court or regulator lawfully requires it.
Where your data is stored and processed
The providers that run JuaBei store or process data in these places:
- Our database, including accounts and alerts: Supabase, in the European Union (Frankfurt).
- The website itself: Vercel, with the servers for this site in the European Union (Frankfurt) and a global network that serves pages closer to you.
- Our background server that checks prices and sends alerts: DigitalOcean, in the European Union (Frankfurt).
- WhatsApp messages: Meta's WhatsApp Business Platform, which operates globally under Meta's own terms.
- Email, only if you added an address: Resend, in the United States.
- Visit counts: Plausible, in the European Union.
- SMS sign-in codes: our SMS providers in Kenya.
Some of these providers are outside Kenya. We transfer personal data to them under section 48 of the Data Protection Act, 2019, on the basis of the consent you give when you create an account or set an alert, and because the service you asked for cannot run without them. Ask us at the address below if you want more detail on any of them.
How long we keep it
By kind of data:
- Preferences saved in your browser: until you clear them.
- Buy clicks: kept as long-term statistics under their random token; the visitor cookie expires on its own after about 13 months.
- Searches: kept as counts, with nothing that identifies you.
- Your account (name, phone number, optional email): until you delete it from the Account screen or ask us to. Deleting it removes the account record at once and switches off your alerts.
- Alerts: an alert runs until you stop it, reply STOP, or delete your account; it is then switched off at once. The alert records and the record of each alert we sent stay, with the number, until you ask us to delete them, and we delete them when you ask.
- WhatsApp conversations with our number: kept until you ask us to delete them.
- Sign-in code logs (which number was sent a code, and when): kept to enforce sending limits and for security.
- Technical logs at our providers: a short period for security and troubleshooting.
Your rights under the Data Protection Act
The Kenya Data Protection Act, 2019 gives you rights over personal data we hold about you. You can:
- Be told what we hold and why, and get a copy of it.
- Have anything inaccurate or misleading corrected.
- Have your data deleted.
- Object to how we are using it, or withdraw a consent you gave us, at any time.
- Complain to the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) if you believe we have handled your data wrongly.
To use any of these, email privacy@juabei.co.ke. We will answer as quickly as we can, and within the time the law allows. If you have never created an account, the honest answer will usually be that we hold nothing about you beyond an anonymous visitor cookie.
Children
JuaBei is not aimed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 18. If you are under 18, ask a parent or guardian before giving us a phone number for alerts. If we find that we have collected a child's data without proper consent, we delete it.
Changes to this policy
If we change how we handle personal data, we update this page and the date at the top of it. Material changes to the alerts service will be flagged to people who have alerts running.
